Born in 1951 in Berlin, Michael Kramer is a sculptor and abstract painter.
Michael Kramer lives and works in Germany and France. Growing up in Berlin in the 70s shaped the beginning of the artist’s career. Having studied art history at the Technical University of Berlin and graduating in art pedagogy and artistic studies as a master student of Fred Thieler’s, led onto the beginning stages of shaping a career as a metal sculptor.
The merging approach of Michael’s work is the intensive reference and examination of spatial specifications as well as the artistic reaction to situations and materials found. Michael Kramer is known for his constructive and expansive sculpture installations and walls placed in New York, Paris, Antwerp, Cologne, Hamburg and Berlin. Some of the sculptures are non-purpose objects, others serve as usable small architectural or mundane functional objects.
The artist’s unique approach regarding the use of material and multimedia techniques has led him to create a versatile body of work including sculpture, paintings and collages. Making use of accidental moments in the process to further explore ideas of control vs. chaos and recreation, the artist’s collages and paintings have also given a second life to giant advertising posters and x-rays.
